Rapid-Fire is GoombaStomp’s weekly Playstation news column, commenting on all of the Sony stories that you need to know about. This week, Final Fantasy celebrates thirty years of history, the industry mourns the loss of one of its finest, The Last Guardian receives a price cut, and more.

Square Enix Celebrates Thirty Years of Final Fantasy

This week marked thirty years since the first Final Fantasy game was released in Japan, an incredible milestone for the franchise and for Square Enix.

To celebrate, Square Enix held 30th anniversary festivities and held a presentation in Tokyo, where much more information was shed on the future of Final Fantasy XV, the release date of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age and the current state of Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Artwork Revealed, Game Still in Early Development

The opening ceremony of the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary celebration led off with a bang, showcasing the official key art for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

No further information on the game’s development was announced during the event, despite this also being the 20th anniversary of the original title. Director Tetsuya Nomura, who is also responsible for Kingdom Hearts III, recently provided an update on each game’s progress, saying they “still have a way to go” on both of the highly-anticipated titles.

We do know Final Fantasy VII Remake is in development for the PS4 and will be packaged in individual episodes, each of which have been described as being the size of a full game.

Final Fantasy XV‘s First Character DLC Coming March 28

The first piece of character-based DLC for Final Fantasy XV will be released on March 28, according to Dualshockers.

Gladiolus will be the focus of this additional content, with each of the other members of the “boy band” receiving their own episodes in the future. Those who purchased Premium Editions of Final Fantasy XV or season passes will receive access to Episode Gladiolus and all future downloadable episodes.

Magitek Exosuit Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy XV’s upcoming Magitek Exosuits

However, before Gladio has his moment, a new cosmetic pack will give players the opportunity to wear Magitek Exosuits, giving the comrades a look reminiscent of the Power Rangers. Players will be able to acquire these suits through a free “Booster Pack” or a paid “Booster Pack +.”
The Exosuits also have incredible abilities, making the party members invincible for 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the suits require a 24-hour recharge in order to use the power again.

Episode Prompto, focusing on the fun-loving photographer, will release sometime in June. The other episodes, one centered on Ignis as well as the Comrades DLC (which will integrate four-player online co-op), do not yet have release dates.

UPDATE: Due to concerns about the similarities between the Magitek Exosuits and the new Power Rangers uniforms, the suits will be available at a later date after a redesigning of the content is complete.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age to Arrive in July

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, the remastered edition of the 2006 PS2 title, will be released on July 11 on PS4.

This release date applies to North America and Europe, but Japan will have to wait a little longer to purchase the long-awaited title. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age will become available in Japan on July 13.

For the first time, Western audiences will have access to the Zodiac Job System, a 12-job character progression system only available in the original Japanese version of the game.

First announced at E3 last year, the remaster will improve on a number of features from the original game, adding upgraded graphics, a remastered soundtrack, 7.1 surround sound, auto-saving, faster load times and a Trial mode.

Massive Updates on the Way for Final Fantasy XV in February

Director Hajime Tabata announced that major updates will be coming to Final Fantasy XV, the first of which is to arrive on February 21.

PlayStation 4 Pro support will become available on this date, packaged in the “Booster Pack” DLC. The additional support will improve frame rates to 60 fps, but will also include modifications to some in-game content. Both PS4 and PS4 Pro players will receive an increased level cap, which will rise to 120, and the option to listen to music when riding a chocobo.

A revamping of the infamous chapter 13 of Final Fantasy XV is also coming soon, releasing simultaneously with the Episode Gladiolus DLC on March 28. “Enhancements” from the team aim to improve the late-stage gameplay, noted Tabata, which received criticism from players at launch for being too slow and closed-in compared to the rest of the open world game.

Tabata also revealed that, following the update, Gladiolus will be a playable character during this section of the game.

Square Enix is also working on an update that would give players free reign over the Regalia, giving them the opportunity to explore the wilderness of Eos.

Namco Founder, Industry Legend, Passes Away at 91

Bandai Namco announced this week that Masaya Nakamura, founder of the company, died on January 22, IGN reports.

The company released the information of Nakamura’s death via a press release Monday.

Bandai-Namco’s Masaya Nakamura

Nakamura founded Namco in 1955, originally calling it Nakamura Manufacturing and building children’s rides for department stores.

Namco came from the company’s later renaming to Nakamura Amusement Machine Manufacturing Company. Under this name, they published classic titles including Pac-ManDig Dug and Xevious.

Nakamura held an honorary position with the company after Namco’s merger with Bandai, creating Namco-Bandai, which was later changed to Bandai Namco. In 2007, he was honored by the Japanese government with the Order of the Rising Sun for his contributions to the industry.

Nintendo of America took to Twitter to react to the news.

“As a [third-party] partner Namco has been a big part of Nintendo’s history, thanks in large part to Masaya Nakamura,” the tweet said. “He changed gaming for the better.”

Despite Underwhelming Sales, EA Views Titanfall 2 as a Success

During a call to investors, EA CEO Andrew Wilson reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the “Titanfall” franchise as well as those still enjoying the game.

“We’re not seeing it as an underperformance at this juncture,” said Wilson, according to VG24/7. “What we have demonstrated as an organisation is that with great games, we can sell them for many months and often many years.”

Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2

In a year riddled with the most popular first-person shooter franchises, the popularity of Titanfall 2 could not reach the levels achieved by Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Battlefield 1 or Doom.

Although it may not have sold massive units upon release, Titanfall 2 has continued to sell steadily since, driving Wilson to compare it to another of EA’s shooters, Battlefield 4. Battlefield 4 continued to move units for years after launch until the release of Battlefield 1.

“So, the way we think about Titanfall is that we have what is one of the best games of this year, and certainly one of the best games in this generation of consoles. And we’ve got a development team who have unbelievable pedigree and a commitment to continue to support the community, and we expect to continue to grow that community through the coming fiscal year.”

Although EA has expressed its continued interest in the franchise, there is still no promise that the series will receive a third title. Zampella has said that the team would “definitely like to tell more of the story and the universe.”

The Last Guardian Receives Permanent Price Cut

Suspicions that The Last Guardian drastically undersold has seemingly been confirmed by a $20 price drop that went into effect this week.

The Last Guardian tells the story of a boy and his bird-dog, Trico.

A Sony representative confirmed to Polygon Wednesday that the cut, a 33 percent discount from the game’s launch price, is permanent across all retailers in both digital and physical forms.

This is just another troubled chapter in the difficult story of The Last Guardian, the Sony-published title nearly a decade in the making. A price drop this soon after launch is not a good sign for the game’s sales figures, although Sony has not spoken to whether the The Last Guardian has met expectations.

This may not be a surprise to many, who thought that Team Ico’s creation had a history too difficult to overcome. The game had an overwhelmingly positive critical reception despite its problems, but did not move significant units through the holiday season.

Bungie to Hold a Destiny Fan Convention?

Bungie has registered a trademark in the US for “DestinyCon,” sparking rumors of a fan convention coming for the popular online game.

According to Dualshockers, the trademark was filed under classification 41, allowing for ““organizing and conducting fan conventions in the fields of video and computer games, more particularly in connection with the game Destiny.”

No official word has come from Bungie regarding the trademark or the potential fan convention. However, this would not be the first celebration for fans of the popular first-person shooter. Popular streamers ProfessorBroman and King Gothalion have been organizing GuardianCon for the last few years, and have been selling tickets for this year’s convention.

ProfessorBroman is not convinced that this means Bungie will be putting on its own convention, pointing out that this could just be another form of IP protection. When he originally named the fan convention “Destiny Community Con,” he received word from Bungie forcing him to change it.

Destiny II is supposedly coming this year.

Watch Ninja On An Episode Of Family Feud

Don’t miss the moment Steve Harvey meets Ninja for the first time.

Published

By

Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins is heading up a team on Celebrity Family Feud this weekend, but it’s not the first time the famed Fortnite streamer has appeared on the show.

Long before he reached household name status in the gaming community, Ninja appeared on the televised game show Family Feud in 2015, when he and his family went on a three-day winning streak before losing to the Beams family of Hendersonville, Tennessee.

With Blevins now appearing on an upcoming episode of Celebrity Family Feud, we thought it would be fun to revisit those earlier episodes which have now all been uploaded online.

Regardless if you like Ninja and/or the show, you’ll get a kick out of watching his introduction when he tells host Steve Harvey that he’s a professional video game player who travels across the country and competes, playing video games. The reaction on Harvey’s face is priceless since nobody at the time could have ever guessed how popular Ninja, not to mention streaming video games, would eventually become.

Watch the videos below. Enjoy!

Check Out the Explosive First Gameplay of ‘Kerbal Space Program 2’

Published

Kerbal Space Program 2

Gamescom 2019 brought with it a host of surprising game announcements and updates on existing games. One of the most unexpected announcements was the reveal of Kerbal Space Program 2, the sequel to the viral, totally accurate space simulator that first released on PC back in 2011.

Now, shortly after its initial reveal, Gamespot has gone live with the first gameplay of this much-anticipated sequel. Fittingly enough, the footage showcases all the spectacularly explosive spaceships, interstellar exploration, and intrepid Kerbal explorers that the series has become known for.

It should be noted that the footage is pre-alpha, so although the gameplay does show some issues with frame rate and graphics, those should be polished up before the game’s full launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2020.

Here’s the full description of the game, courtesy of its official website:

With the original Kerbal Space Program having become one of the most beloved games of all time and now bigger than ever, Kerbal Space Program 2 has been fully redesigned from the ground up to meet the demands of modern and next-generation space exploration, all while maintaining the monumental foundations of the first game. Build a space program, construct powerful spacecraft, design resource-gathering colonies, and much more to uncover the secrets of the galaxy. A plethora of exciting new features will captivate veteran and returning players, as well as usher in a whole new wave of Kerbonauts to the ingenious and comedic world that has entertained millions of players.

Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ Soundtrack Gets a Vinyl Release

Published

on

By

While we don’t publish music news or music reviews here at Goomba Stomp, we are huge fans of vinyl and since we cover film, we figured this announcement would interest some of our readers.

Back in 2017, Jordan Peele’s Get Out topped our list of the best films of 2017 and while the year isn’t yet over, there’s a good chance his follow-up Us, will land somewhere on our best of the year list as well. There are many reasons why we love Peele’s ambitious sophomore film including for the suspense, cinematography, performances, and direction, but one thing that doesn’t get enough praise is the soundtrack by Michael Abels. And if you like us, love the original score, you’re going to love this bit of news.

After giving his Get Out soundtrack a vinyl release last year, Jordan Peele is now doing the same for the soundtrack to Us.

WaxWork Records announced the news earlier today and if you’re planning on buying a copy, you don’t have to wait since it is now available to purchase through the label’s website.

The soundtrack, which received a digital release earlier this year, features composer Michael Abels’ score, in addition to songs from Janelle Monáe, Minnie Ripperton and the “Tethered Mix” of Luniz’s “I Got 5 on It” that appeared in the film’s first trailer. The album artwork was created by illustrator Edward Kinsella and features an interactive die-cut mirror board back cover, a heavyweight art print and an exclusive essay from UCLA Professor, scholar, and activist Shana L. Redmond Ph.D.
