Rapid-Fire: ‘Overwatch’ Hero Becomes a Feminist Icon

Rapid-Fire is GoombaStomp’s weekly Playstation news column, commenting on all of the Sony stories that you need to know about. This week, an Overwatch character became the symbol for a real-world movement, Marvel and Square Enix announced an exciting new partnership, and Avalanche Software found a new place to call home.

Overwatch Hero Becomes an Icon for the Feminist Community?

A number of communities and advocacy groups joined together on January 21 to march in support of women around the world. Standing out from all others in the South Korean crowd was a small contingent bearing a flag displaying a bunny logo familiar to Overwatch fans.

The National D.Va Association garnered worldwide attention after a photograph from the Women’s March in Seoul, South Korea showcased the unique flag. After further investigation, it was discovered that the group is comprised of Overwatch fans who also fight for feminism.

According to the alliance’s Tumblr page, they aim to spark a change in the gaming community by eliminating the sexism that still occurs much too often.

The National D.Va Association began to protest against the opinions of Park Geun Hye, former president of South Korea, many of which were offensive to womens’ rights advocates. After Park’s impeachment in December, the group “decided to continue fighting for gender equality instead of dismantling.”

For the members of the group, D.Va seemed to be the perfect mascot for their cause, standing as the Korean female role model that doesn’t exist in the sexist world of gaming in their country.

Diva OverwatchWomen who enter pro gaming face intense criticism for their achievements in South Korea. Geguri, a 17-year-old Overwatch player, came under intense scrutiny from fellow players after achieving a win rate of eighty percent. Inven had to host a live stream of Geguri playing to clear her name even after Blizzard reportedly said that her skills were entirely her own.

“We all know that D.Va is a Korean Overwatch character, who is a woman, yet thrives in the gaming world,” says the group’s Tumblr page. “Geguri is a Korean woman pro gamer who was accused of using hacks just because ‘it was impossible for women to play games that well’.”

“We decided to act for feminism under her [D.Va’s] emblem, so that in 2060, someone like D.Va could actually appear.”

When not participating in marches or protests, the group runs a feminist book club that meets every two weeks and is planning a gender-inclusive Overwatch competition, welcoming female and gender-queer players.

Although the world of gaming has come a long way, the work of the National D.Va Association illustrates how much is still left to finish before all are truly welcome to game.

Marvel, Square-Enix Announce The Avengers Game Partnership

Marvel and Square-Enix announced a multi-game partnership via their social media feeds on Thursday, unveiling a trailer for what they are calling “the Avengers project.”

The video, just under a minute long, teases some separation between the Avengers as the public’s view on superheroes has shifted. The world no longer welcomes these heroes, but sees them as dangerous threats due to their differences from the human populace.

Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, studios best known for the Deus Ex franchise and Tomb Raider, are taking the lead on development. No characters have been officially announced, but Thor’s hammer, Iron Man’s suit, and Captain America’s shield all made cameos in the teaser.

The trailer’s YouTube description revealed more details on the project’s direction, confirming that the game will feature a completely original story.

“The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise,” said the description on Marvel’s YouTube video. “Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.”

More details on the Avengers project and the other games involved in the partnership will be released in 2018.

Acclaimed Developer Playdead Reveals Concept Art for Upcoming Title

Coming off of the success of critical darling Inside, Playdead teased their next title via a Twitter post. The Tweet, comprised of a single screenshot and a thank you from the developer, divulged that the team, alongside studio founder Arnt Jensen, has been hard at work on this upcoming project since Inside‘s release.

The image bears the signature look of a Playdead title, mimicking the dreary landscapes of predecessors Limbo and Inside. From what can be made out in the darkened landscape, a lone figure in a spacesuit-like uniform watches as a meteor crashes down onto the world, a tattered parachute dragging on the planet’s surface.

Although the art appears to be stylistically similar to Limbo and Inside, this future title’s development will be markedly different from that of its predecessors. Studio co-founder Dino Patti parted ways with the studio following Inside‘s release under reportedly caustic circumstances.

Despite the teaser, fans should be cautiously optimistic about another Playdead title arriving anytime soon. Studio history shows that the developer is not afraid to take the time to craft their desired product, taking six years to work on Inside following Limbo‘s release.

Prey Finally Gets a Proper Release Date

Bethesda has announced that Prey will officially release on May 5, 2017, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Word was delivered via a new trailer, which also gave the world a more in-depth look into main character Morgan Yu’s quest for survival while aboard the alien-ridden Talos I Space Station.

prey bethesdaAfter an extraterrestrial threat takes hold of the space station, Yu must survive long enough to annihilate the predators before they kill everyone onboard. Using alien abilities as well as devices built in the game’s crafting system, Yu looks to be the only human capable of handling the task.

The trailer also showcased a bonus pack available to players looking to pre-order the upcoming title. The Cosmonaut Shotgun Pack will include the Margrave shotgun and ammo plans (which are family heirlooms of Morgan’s, according to Bethesda), three Neuromods, two medkits, a shotgun ammo Fabrication Plan, and a Recycler Shielding Chipset.

bethesda preyPrey‘s release has been a long time coming for fans of the original game. First unveiled as Prey 2 in 2011 by studio Human Head, the game suffered from a number of delays due to Bethesda’s belief that development had “not progressed satisfactorily” and did not meet quality standards.

Arkane was given control of the project in 2013, but could not do enough to stop Bethesda from canceling the title by the end of the next year. Development efforts since have been dedicated to the revamped Prey.

Disney Infinity Studio revived, has a second life under Warner Bros.

Avalanche Software, the brains behind Disney Infinity and one of the many studios closed in recent years, has found a new home under Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, developing a Cars 3 video game.

Last year, the studio was dismantled following Disney’s confirmation that it would no longer be self-publishing games. Warner Bros. took advantage of the opportunity, reforming the studio and appointing John Blackburn as the head of their latest addition.

avalanchesoftware“The Avalanche talent and technology are a great addition to our group of outstanding developers, and we are excited for this Cars 3 game as well as all of the future games the team will create under John’s leadership,” said Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment David Haddad.

Cars 3 will be developed using Avalanche Software’s in-house Octane engine (Warner Bros. currently owns the rights to this technology).

Disney Infinity remains a canceled project, but fans will not have to wait long for Avalanche’s next endeavor. The upcoming title based on the Pixar film is slated for a 2017 release. No platforms have been specified at this time.

Watch the Creepy Trailer for ‘Little Nightmares 2’: Six is Back and She has Help.

Published

on

By

One of the biggest surprises to come out of Gamescom 2019 so far is the announcement of Little Nightmares 2, the sequel to the puzzle-platformer hit horror game developed by Tarsier Studios.

While the first Little Nightmares has you take control a character named Six while avoiding instant death as she traverses alone amongst the depths of a dungeon, the sequel will give her a companion named Mono, who must accompany Six throughout her terrifying new journey.

Little Nightmares was one of our favorite games of 2017 and so we can’t wait to get our hands on the sequel. In our review, James Baker wrote, “Tarsier Studios have created a wholly original concept to a horror genre that has leaned more towards thriller before anything else, bringing its roots back without relying on jump-scares and needlessly-gory shocks. Just like hide-and-seek, Little Nightmares captures the fear of being caught, albeit in a creepy, macabre style.”

Little Nightmares 2 will be released sometime in 2020 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.

Watch the trailer below and if you are a fan of the first game, we recommend reading this article that dives deep into the meaning behind Little Nightmares.

NBA 2K20’s Story Mode Gets a Stunning Trailer

Published

on

By

NBA 2K19 features to date, its strongest MyCareer mode with the aptly titled, “The Way Back”, a fascinating look at the culture behind college basketball recruiting. The story mode was well received by critics and fans everywhere and in our review, we called it, “an incredible achievement that conveys the fabric of modern American life, aspirations and incidentally, sports, in close-up and at length”.

NBA 2K20 which will be released in less than a month, promises to include an even better story mode, and while we haven’t played the game yet, we have plenty of reasons to think it might be. Not only does it feature an all-star cast with top-tier talents such as Idris Elba and Rosario Dawson, but the story mode – entitled “When the Lights Are Brightest” – is being produced by LeBron James’ Springhill Productions, the same company behind the upcoming Space Jam 2.

NBA 2K20’s latest trailer, which debuted Monday during Microsoft’s Inside Xbox show live from Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, give us a good idea of what to expect. We get a glimpse at Idris Elba and Rosario Dawson in action as well as the rest of the supporting cast which includes Thomas Middleditch, Mark Cuban, Ernie Hudson, Lamorne Morris, Scottie Pippen, and Jaleel White!

The NBA 2K20 demo will go live on Wednesday, Aug. 21 and will allow players to create a character and get a head start on MyCareer. Any progress made will carry over to the full game, which will be released Sept. 6 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.
